KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS
-
Back in 1968, brothers Fred and Richard Young began playing together with cousins
Greg Martin and Anthony Kenney at
the home of Fred and Richard's grandmother. Informally named the
Itchy Brothers, they soon added Mark Orr
to the group.
After 13 years of informal playing, the band split up. In 1985
the band
re-formed minus Kenney, with the addition of brothers Doug
and
Ricky Lee Phelps.
Renamed
Kentucky Headhunters, they played the Chitlin'
Show, WLOC radio,
Munfordville, KY

At the time Greg was
reading Robert Palmer's book 'Deep Blues', and was drawn to the name
of an early
Muddy Water's band called
The Headhunters.
This exposure landed them a deal with Mercury and recorded their first album, 1989's entitled Pickin'
On Nashville. The single Dumas Walker
reached #15 in 1990, and Lonesome Me went to # 6 on the charts. After a second
album, Electric Barnyard, the Phelps brothers left the group to
form Brothers Phelps. Kenney and Orr rejoined the Headhunters and
they released Rave On in 1993 followed by That'll
Work,
featured Blues piano legend
Johnnie Johnson. In 1996, Doug Phelps
returned as lead
vocalist. Their latest SOUL is a musical travelogue that transports listeners far beyond
the city limits of Nashville to explore influences of Memphis, Muscle Shoals, and rural environs known only to
musicians with a steady itinerary of off the beaten path
Blues clubs where music is born from the influences
of the old masters. Sibling band mates Richard and
Fred K. Young, their cousins Anthony Kenney
and Greg Martin, and Doug Phelps are perfect hosts for the grand
tour SOUL provides.
