LivinBlues Feature - THE 13 DAYS OF BLUES-MAS - by Gary Tate
Christmas is a very special time for Blues fans. I think it’s got something to do with the contradictory feelings that the yuletide period elicits. The happiest times for some can be the loneliest for others. Blues, R&B, and Soul music are perfectly positioned for this dichotomy. So here are my 13 days of Blues-mas, and wishing they reveal the palette of conflicting emotions in the coming season, via the Blues.

Eddie C. Campbell (Mp3-Santa’s Messing With The Kid) - A wild n' wooly oldie that’s become a bona fide classic. One of the catchiest tunes associated with that hint of Jack Frost in the air.

Mark Hummel (Mp3-Thank You, Santa Claus) - A song centered on the 9/11 tragedy. When his 10-year old daughter safely flew in from New Jersey to California to see him.

Canned Heat (Mp3-Christmas Blues) - A needed antidote for much of the saccharine fare meted out around this time of year. Goin up the chimney!

Charles Brown (Mp3-Merry Christmas, Baby) - Probably the most beloved and honored Christmas Blues song of them all. Charles Brown made this Christmas Blues a gift to us all.

Carla Thomas (Mp3-Gee Whiz, It’s Christmas) - Maybe you think this is just a tie-in on her Gee Whiz hit. If so, youre way off the mark.

Detroit Junior (Mp3-Christmas Day) - Ain’t got no money but wanna feel real good Christmas day? This tune will do the trick. Get out the egg nog!

Etta James (Mp3- Winter Wonderland) - Yes it been done 10,000 times, but Etta wisely surrounded herself with some crafty Jazz stalwarts who take this nugget into new directions.

Santo & Johnny (Mp3-Twistin’ Bells) - The Farina Brothers did more than just Sleepwalk. They also knocked out some unabashed rockers, like this demented version of Jingle Bells.

Lowell Fulson (Mp3-Lonesome Christmas) - Lowell Fulson's fantastic guitar tone rings out like the bells on Santa’s sleigh. A carol for lost souls!

Sweet Inspirations (Mp3-Everyday Will Be Like A Holiday) - This spectacular Christmas tune and performance should be heard way more often. Soon to become a Blues-mas standard.

Xl·Little Ed & The Blues Imperials (Mp3-I’m Your Santa) - Nobody in the Blues world can instigate the partying spirit better than Little Ed. Go Santa Go!

Xll·Fathead (Mp3-Tonight Feels Like Christmas) - A feel-good soul blaster that oozes well wishes and eager anticipation. John Mays delivers the presents!

Xlll·Texas Pete Mayes (Mp3-Christmas Holidays) - Along with Pete, I want to wish you and yours the best of the holiday season. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
